WHO IS JESUS?
For years people have been asking the question "Who is Jesus?" There is only one place to find the right answer and that is the Word of God. In the first chapter of John's gospel we have a good picture of Jesus. I like what John the Baptist had to say about Jesus. In John 1:29, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." From this verse we begin to see Jesus for who He truly is. Notice John uses the metaphor of a lamb - this is very important in understanding Jesus.
1. God's requirement: As the blood of a lamb was required by God in the Old Testament for the forgiveness of sin, so it is in the New Testament. Jesus is that required blood in the New Testament. In fact the Bible says (Hebrews 9:22), "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin." So the blood of Jesus met God's requirement.
2. His Purpose: The Bible says that He (Jesus) came to give His life (Matthew 20:28), "Even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life for many." The Bible tells us over and over that Jesus came to give His life for us. First Corinthians 57b," For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us." Notice the reference to the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:13), "And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you."
3. His Completion: Jesus completed the work that His Father sent Him to do. In John's gospel we find these words (John 19:30), "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the Ghost." Jesus never wavered from His mission; Philippians 2:8 shows this, "And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." He did this for you!
